Starling Bank

Starling Bank is a British neobank founded in 2014 by Anne Boden. It holds a full UK banking licence and is notable for reaching profitability earlier than many peers, and for its popular business banking product.1

History

Starling was founded in 2014 by Anne Boden, a career banker, and launched its app-based current account in 2017. It also operates a banking-as-a-service platform for other businesses.

Founders

Anne Boden MBE is the founder of Starling Bank and the first woman to found a British bank. Born in Swansea, Wales, in 1960, she studied computer science and chemistry at Swansea University and later earned an MBA from Middlesex University. Boden spent three decades in banking and technology leadership at institutions including Lloyds, Standard Chartered, UBS, Aon, ABN AMRO, RBS and Allied Irish Banks (where she was COO) before founding Starling in 2014.

Boden built Starling as a fully licensed UK digital bank with owned technology, personal and business accounts, and later the Engine banking-as-a-service platform. She received an MBE for services to financial technology in 2018, steered Starling to earlier profitability than many UK peers, and stepped down as CEO in 2023 while remaining associated with the bank she founded.

Licence and business banking

Starling holds a full UK banking licence with FSCS deposit protection. Beyond personal accounts, its business banking franchise and Engine banking-as-a-service platform became major growth engines—letting other brands embed Starling's rails. The bank reported profitability earlier than many UK challenger peers.

Reception

Starling is frequently ranked among the UK's strongest digital banks for app quality and SME tools. Coverage often contrasts Anne Boden's incumbent-banking background with consumer-fintech peers founded by non-bankers, and notes Starling's emphasis on owning its technology stack.

Products

Starling offers personal, joint and business current accounts, savings "Spaces", overdrafts and lending, alongside its Engine BaaS platform.
