Partner bank

A partner bank (also called a sponsor bank) is a licensed bank that holds customer deposits, issues cards or provides compliance infrastructure for a non-bank brand that owns the app and customer relationship.1 This partner-bank model—often delivered via banking as a service—defines many U.S. neobanks such as Chime, Cash App and Mercury.

Overview

The fintech markets and supports the product; the partner bank is the regulated deposit-taker (for example FDIC-insured in the U.S.). Contracts allocate compliance duties, but regulators increasingly hold both sides accountable when programmes fail.

Trade-offs

Advantages include faster launch and lower capital requirements than a full charter. Risks include partner concentration, programme shutdowns, and customer confusion about who "is the bank." The Synapse bankruptcy highlighted operational and custodial risks in U.S. BaaS chains.

Examples

Chime, Current, Varo (before/while pursuing charter paths), Mercury, Novo, Up and Slash illustrate partner or hybrid structures. Licensed alternatives include Monzo, Starling Bank, WeBank and Ally Bank.
