Eversend
Eversend is a financial technology company offering a multi-currency wallet, remittances, virtual cards and global receive accounts aimed at Africans and the diaspora. It was founded in Paris in 2017 by Ugandan entrepreneurs Stone Atwine and Ronald Kasendwa; the consumer app launched in March 2019.1 The company reports more than 1.6 million registered users, customers in 57 countries and over $1 billion processed.
History
Atwine has said the company grew from the pain of sending remittances home (including to family in Uganda) after he moved to France. Early co-founder Emma Smith is cited in interviews alongside Kasendwa. Eversend joined programmes including Techstars, the Visa Accelerator and Google for Startups, then expanded from wallets into cards, USD/EUR receive accounts, stablecoin settlement and APIs other fintechs can build on.2 Most of the product team sits in Kampala, with offices also listed in London, New York and Lagos.
Founders
Stone Atwine is co-founder and chief executive officer. A computer-science graduate of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, he previously worked in African payments before founding Eversend.
Ronald Kasendwa is co-founder and chief technology officer, leading engineering as Eversend moved from a remittance wallet to owned cross-border rails.
Licences and model
Eversend operates through licensed entities and partners rather than a single full bank charter. The company cites Bank of Uganda licences and remittance authorisations in markets such as Kenya and Zambia. Balances are wallet/e-money style: users hold 16 currencies (including major African currencies plus USD, EUR and GBP), convert in-app and pay out to banks and mobile money such as M-Pesa.
Products
Consumer and business products include multi-currency wallets, instant sends to banks and mobile money across about 18 countries, virtual Visa cards for online spend, global USD/EUR account details for inbound payments, and a REST API for collections, FX and payouts. Stablecoins are used as an always-on settlement layer alongside local rails.
